Bali, famous for its stunning beaches and rich culture, is also home to an emerging specialty coffee Bali scene that’s gaining global attention. Beyond the island’s scenic landscapes lies a coffee culture that blends history, tradition, and modern innovation, making it a must-visit destination for coffee enthusiasts.

Article overview
Bali’s relationship with coffee dates back to Dutch colonial times when plantations began to flourish across the island. Today, the legacy of those early days lives on, evolving into a vibrant specialty coffee culture that showcases Bali’s distinct character. Whether it’s beans grown on the island’s fertile volcanic soil or innovative brewing techniques, Bali’s coffee scene offers unique flavors and experiences you won’t find anywhere else.
Notable Roasters
Bali’s specialty coffee scene wouldn’t be what it is without the talent and creativity of its roasters. Each roaster on the island brings their own approach to the craft, using carefully sourced beans and meticulous roasting techniques to create unforgettable flavors.
During our exploration of specialty coffee Bali, we sought out some of the island’s most celebrated roasters, each with their own story to tell. From micro-roasteries hidden in lush mountain villages to urban cafés that combine modern design with traditional methods, Bali’s roasters are pushing the boundaries of what coffee can be.
Hungry Bird

We’ve been here
In 2013, Indonesian Aeropress Champion Prawira Adhiguna, better known as Edo, brought his passion for coffee to life by founding Hungry Bird in Canggu. What started as a dream to serve exceptional coffee to surfers and the local community has grown into a cornerstone of specialty coffee in Bali, drawing coffee lovers from near and far.

Edo, along with his team of talented roasters and baristas, has created a café that’s all about precision and flavor. Hungry Bird has become a key player in Canggu’s coffee culture, offering everything from perfectly crafted espressos to unique single-origin brews that highlight the best of Indonesian coffee.

When visiting Hungry Bird, I highly recommend trying the West Java Wanoja Avisani, processed using the Natural Anaerobic method. This coffee features incredible tasting notes of blackcurrant, muscat grape, and jasmine—a cup that’s both vibrant and memorable.

If you’re looking for something beyond their main menu, be sure to check out their special releases, which often include exclusive beans sourced from around the world.
Whether you’re a surfer looking for your morning caffeine fix or a coffee enthusiast eager to explore Bali’s specialty coffee scene, Hungry Bird is a must-visit destination that delivers on both quality and creativity.
Expat Roasters

We’ve been here
One of the shining stars in specialty coffee Bali is Expat Roasters. Founded by award-winning head barista Shae Macnamara, this roastery has built its reputation on crafting exceptional coffee while maintaining a strong commitment to supporting local farmers.

Expat Roasters works closely with coffee growers within a 40km radius, building long-term relationships that allow for experimentation with farming techniques and processing methods. Over 95% of their beans are sourced from within Indonesia, with a smaller selection carefully chosen from global brokers to round out their offerings. This connection to local farmers is a key part of their success, ensuring their coffee is both high-quality and sustainably produced.

When visiting one of their three cafés in Bali, I highly recommend trying their natural process coffee from the Kintamani region. This unique brew offers bold and funky flavors, with tasting notes of sweet rockmelon, peanut, and jackfruit, along with a finish of dates and biscuits. It’s a cup that perfectly captures the creativity and skill behind Expat Roasters’ approach.

Another feature that sets them apart is their use of an aerator for filter coffee. This device adds controlled air into the brewed coffee as it’s poured, enhancing the body, clarity, and overall flavor of the cup. It’s an innovative touch that makes their coffee experience stand out even more.
